Christmas Everyday

When we were little, our parents would tell us stories about a round bellied man in a red suit that climbs up a chimney and give gifts. But in our case (Being in the Philippines), just open a window and live a glass of milk and cookie and Santa is up to get it leaving us with toys and love. Christmas is approaching but it doesnt feel like it is. My friends and I had dinner together and I asked them if they can feel the spirit of Christmas. Sadly, they said no. I'd answer the same thing. I guess with our country now and with the financial crisis, people are having a hard time celebrating Christmas. Im not a cheery type of person but just wondering, can we not all celebrate the Holidays without even spending alot of money? Just being at home with your family and talk like there's no tomorrow feels like Christmas, dont you think so? When I was little I loved Christmas, I remembered my cousin coming over during the Christmas morning or sometimes we'd have a sleep over. But things are different now. As people grow older, they tend to believe less. With School and work, there's really not much time to celebrate the Holiday at all.

I remember back in High School, our school magazine featured an article written way back in 1897, an 8-year-old girl wrote to the New York Sun asking if there was any Santa Clause. Francis P. Church, being the Editor-in-Chief of the said newspaper had a hard time answering the question. Imagine a little girl can bring such questions to your mind you never knew you had. He was able to write his reply on the very Christmas Eve where he was walking along Central Park watching little kids play, friends hanging out, lovers reminicsing old days and him just watching those people. And he said "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause".

My best line he wrote is

-- "The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in this world."

Its true, is it not? All people have to do is have a little faith. Christmas is not all about spending too much, recieving gifts or having a great meal. These are the things you see but the things you dont are the laughters you hear, the tears of joy, a hug from a friend and a kiss from a loved one. These are what makes up Christmas. You dont have to wait for the day to come to experience all of these, cause you see? Christmas is everyday without the bright lights, the tall trees and the glittering gifts.

Things in the past will always remain in the past but remembering them keeps them alive. Its sad that things are different now but we have to leave room for change. Maybe I was wrong, maybe I do still love Christmas!! And I know there is a Santa Clause. He even doesnt have to be a round bellied man in a red suit.
